Everything Homeowners Need to Know About Drain Cleaning

What is Drain Cleaning?

When it comes to plumbing issues, clogged pipes are one of the most common. However, there is a way for plumbers to unclog and prevent clogs. Drain cleaning is a service that plumbers offer that can be used to both unclog blocked lines and prevent future clogs. This article will discuss common signs that drain cleaning is needed and the common methods used.

Signs Your Home Needs Drain Cleaning

The last thing any homeowner should do is wait until the toilets backup or no water drains to realize they have a clogged sewer line. There are plenty of warning signs that indicate the need for drain cleaning, including:

  • Slower draining
  • Standing water in the shower or tub
  • Gurgling noises when water drains
  • Foul odors from the drains
  • Water backups from a drain

Because water is stopped from flowing through the sewer line when it clogs, it will often cause issues in other areas. For example, if there’s a clogged sewer line, the toilets may clog frequently, or water could drain much slower around the home.

How Does Drain Snaking Work?

A drain snake is one of the most common drain cleaning methods a plumber will use. A drain snake is a smaller flexible auger fed into the pipes and can move deeper into the plumbing manually or by machine. As it goes, it works to either collect debris or punch a hole in larger blockages to unclog the line.

This method is entirely safe on the plumbing system when done by professionals and allows ample flexibility to move throughout the system. A plumber’s snake is handy for clogs caused by excess hair in the drain or a relatively loose blockage in the plumbing system. However, another method may be needed for heavy-duty blockages and preventative drain cleaning.

What About Hydro Jetting?

Hydro jetting is often the most effective drain cleaning method, depending on the clog. This method pumps high-pressure water from 2,000 to 4,000 PSI throughout the plumbing system. It removes blockages and debris on pipe walls that can form clogs in the future, making it an excellent method for preventing clogs.

A hydro jet is safe on plumbing that isn’t too old or in bad condition but must be done by a professional because of the heavy machinery and expertise needed to handle it. A plumber may first need to inspect the pipes with a camera to determine the severity and location of a clog and the condition of the pipes before using hydro jetting as their method of choice.
