Introducing Sewer Squad: Who We Are and What We Do
Welcome to the Sewer Squad blog! We’re experts in drain repair in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area, and this is where we’re going to share home maintenance tips, guides to common plumbing problems, and solutions to plumbing emergencies.
If you’re a homeowner or you’re experiencing problems with your plumbing and draining, we hope you can find some of the answers you’re looking for on our blog.
Who are we and what do we do? We are experts in drain repairs and so much more. We’ll go anywhere in the GTA, including downtown Toronto, Scarborough, Etobicoke, East York, York Region, Mississauga, and Durham Region.
Founded by Phil Stinner, we’re now a small but dedicated team of drain experts who put your convenience and experience first. Drain issues can quickly spiral out of control if you don’t take care of them, but the hassle and stress of drain repair or replacement mean homeowners often put off necessary work.
At Sewer Squad, we believe that coping with drain issues shouldn’t be a painful process. That’s why our work is quick and careful, and why we bring a courteous approach.
Drain Service in Toronto & the GTA
Drains are our area of expertise, but what does that mean? There’s a lot to your home’s plumbing and drain system. Here’s a quick look at the kinds of services Sewer Squad offers:
Clay pipes in the GTA can be ancient, and when they get old, they’re prone to cracking and leaking. Roots can also get inside them, causing them to collapse. One of the jobs we do is repair or replace old drains, including our 25-year warranty. Often homeowners are reluctant to fix their drains because it may involve excavating. Our goal is to make sure excavation if needed, is a painless process for your family, and a clean one.
Toronto has a lot of old infrastructures. The average age of Toronto water mains is 54 years. Recently, a 142-year-old water main was replaced downtown on Adelaide. Most water mains on private property aren’t quite that old, but original drainage and water infrastructure is still in place in plenty of homes.
Water mains can break and interrupt water service to your home. The city can also demand that you fix water main problems, often in a hurry. When you call us, we do everything we can to mitigate the inconvenience of water main replacement, including installing temporary water service so that your family doesn’t have to deal with a service interruption.
Few things are more frustrating than a clogged drain. Water drains slowly or gets completely backed up and bad odours can come back into your home from your pipes. Clogged drains are a messy business. Usually, clogs form in your drain because of food particles (especially starchy foods like rice or potatoes), grease, soap scum, hair, cosmetic towelettes, cat litter, dental floss, and egg shells.
When you’re looking for drain cleaning services in your area, give us a call. There’s no clog too big or too small; we clear small sinks, toilets, and stubborn blockages. Using drop sheets and cleaning up afterwards, we make the process as tidy as possible, so you’re not left cleaning up after us. In addition to any-time drain cleaning, you can also sign up for our drain maintenance program. It’s ideal if you have slow and stubborn drains. If you’re on our drain maintenance program, we clean out your drains with environmentally-friendly products on a monthly basis. It will keep the water flowing smoothly through your drains and prevent bad odours.
Whether you need to repipe drains to reroute them or because they’re old and corroding, give us a call. One of the reasons you may want to reroute your pipes is because they keep freezing in a poorly insulated, north-facing wall. If they are made out of cast iron or steel, there’s also a good chance that there’s a lot of rust buildup that clogs and slows down water flow. They can smell a bad, leak, and expose your home to harmful bacteria.
A sump pump can save your basement during Toronto’s torrential rains or spring thaws. A sump pump system collects excess groundwater in a tank. When the tank fills, the excess water gets pumped away from your home, either through discharge or into the sewage system. With the increased likelihood of extreme weather events and major rainfall, a sump pump is quickly becoming a necessity for homeowners in the GTA.
There are a number of rebates and subsidies for basement protection offered by municipalities like Toronto and Markham. Our technicians can help you find them and complete the paperwork to qualify for a rebate.
While sump pumps protect your basement from groundwater flooding, backwater valves keep out sewage water. Sewage water will devastate your basement and comes with serious health risks. Sewage water is swimming with bacteria and viruses that can cause major illnesses. The clean up will be incredibly expensive, but without the right flood protection, you’re vulnerable every time there’s heavy rainfall.
When storm and sewer systems get overwhelmed, usually because of a storm or increased water flowing through, they can get backed up and send water moving backward through the pipes. A backwater valve automatically seals when water moves backward through the system, keeping sewage from spewing into your home.
Trenchless Pipe Bursting
Pipe bursting technology gives us the ability to replace buried pipes without having to excavate. By inserting a new pipe directly into the old one, we can burst the surroundings. Trenchless pipe bursting is an effective technique for replacing pipes when you don’t want to excavate your property.
While we specialize in emergency drain repair and services, we can also help you install new plumbing fixtures for household plumbing. Get in touch with us if you’re renovating your home and want new fixtures in your kitchen, bath, or laundry.
Other Plumbing Issues
Have another plumbing issue or a problem you’re not sure you can identify? There’s no plumbing issue we can’t solve. Whether it’s losing your hot water, leaky faucets, or water damage to your ceilings and walls, we can fix it.
Drain Camera Inspections
When we get a call, usually the problem is:
- • Strange smells or foul odours coming from pipes or in the basement
- • Unusual noises in pipes and drains
- • Water appearing where it shouldn’t be
The first step in fixing the problem is finding the source.
One way we’ve been using technology to do a better, more thorough job is using camera inspections. If there’s a clog in your drain, we use a camera on a drain snake to see what’s down there. The results are displayed on an iPad with HD-like picture quality, so we can tell exactly what’s going on down there, and you can see the source of the drain clog. These sewer cameras catch exactly where and what the problem is that’s restricting flow through a pipe.
